When people ask me what it’s like living in Korea, i always say the same thing first. It’s safe. Like crazy safe. If u spend some time in Seoul, you prob notice it fast. You can walk at night, even in small alleys, and no one really bother you. I grew up here, and to me it’s normal, but when i hear stories from my friends from US or Europe, they say “wow, i can’t believe you leave laptop at cafe and just go bathroom.” yeah that’s Seoul life.
Walking at night in Seoul
One night i was out late near Hongdae after some fried chicken and beer with friends. I was walking alone to catch the last subway. It was around 1am. Streets still bright, many people around, no scary vibes. In other countries, my friend told me he would never do that alone. Here in Korea, it just feels okay. Even old ladies walk home late. Seoul is a city that never really sleeps, and that makes it safe too.
Why people trust in Korea
Safety here is not only about police. It’s also about culture. In Korea, people care a lot about community. If you drop wallet in subway, there is big chance someone will pick it up and return to police office. I had it happen once at Gangnam Station. I lost my wallet, and next day police called me, everything inside, even cash. My foreign friend was shocked. But this is kinda normal here.
CCTV everywhere
Another reason Seoul feels safe: cameras. Some ppl don’t like it, but honestly it helps. Korea has CCTV on almost every corner. Bus, subway, street, shop. It make crime harder. Of course small stuff can happen, like pickpocket in tourist spot, but big violent crime is very rare. If you search online, you see Seoul ranking high in global safety index. It’s not just talk, it’s data.
Neighborhoods that feel extra safe
I live in Seongsu, a neighborhood now famous for cafes and photo studios. Even late at night, young ppl walk around with cameras, tripods, shopping bags. It feels chill. Jongno area near Jogyesa Temple, many tourists walk even midnight. Same with Gangnam, Itaewon (busy weekends), and Jamsil near Lotte Tower. Some areas can be noisy, but still safe compared to other big cities.
When my cousin from Canada visited, she said Seoul at night felt safer than her small town back home. That say a lot.

If you ever see New Year celebration at Jonggak or festivals in Seoul Plaza, you notice how crowded it gets. Still, police and volunteers everywhere, guiding ppl, helping lost tourists. During 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, global visitors said they felt safe traveling around Korea. That event really showed how the system works: clean trains, safe roads, lots of staff helping in multiple languages.
What about crime in Korea?
Sure, no country is perfect. Korea has some crime, mostly small theft, scams targeting tourists sometimes (like overpriced taxi or shopping tricks). But violent crime rate is super low. If you check UN data, Seoul is one of safest capital cities. Also, Korean news loves to show even small crime cases, so it can look bigger than reality. But for traveler, daily life feels very safe.
I remember once in Insadong, a tourist left camera bag at restaurant. Owner chased after them for 3 blocks just to return it. That’s kind of everyday story here.

Why i think Korea is safe
For me, safety is not just about no crime. It’s about feeling relaxed. In Seoul, i don’t need to worry much. I can focus on work, meet friends, walk home late, enjoy city. Many travelers tell me they feel same after short stay. That’s why more ppl visit every year.
Korea is busy, fast, modern, but also safe. And Seoul is like the heart of that. If you visit, you prob go home telling same story i tell: “wow, Korea is really safe.”
